At heart, a California writer
In my early 20's I came across a college catalog that offered a lit course entitled "California Writers." At the time I was an East Coast refugee, living in southern California, working on a bad first novel and a few stage plays.
All of a sudden there was a label for me, a name for the kind of writer I wanted to be. Of course it helped that the definition was wide open – geography aside, what is a California writer?
MFA: The road not taken
It took eleven long years to get my BA in Lit/Writing. After that, I made the conscious decision to skip graduate school. I wanted my voice and style of writing to reflect the world I was living in: my interactions, my perspectives. I knew it was a risk but it was the road I had to follow.
Adopting a long view
Writing is a long-term investment. I long ago adopted that long view of my craft. In the past few years I feel the investment has begun paying off. My specific flavor of the California writer that I am has begun taking shape. I'm chronicling that evolution in my blog, A Gentle Iconoclast in Paradise
